Being Slightly Underemployed is Better for Innovation…and Job Satisfaction

Innovation: Intentionally build time into your schedule for innovation and His inspiration.

Desired Outcome: Consistent innovation and improved job satisfaction.

You know that if you have too much on your plate, it does not leave room for anything else. When James Watson discovered the DNA Double Helix he said, “It’s necessary to be slightly underemployed if you are to do something significant.” Being slightly underemployed is different than the underemployment we hear of today. In this case, being slightly underemployed is simply not filling every moment of your calendar with tasks and commitments. In other words, making room for His inspiration.

Looking for an Innovative Idea…Check Your Sent Emails

Innovation: Use complaint emails to identify where innovation is required.

Desired Outcome: To improve your systems and offerings through responding effectively to complaints.

If you answer problem emails or can identify the person who does, you have gold in dem hills. By going over your sent emails, you will find recurring problems within your offerings and systems that require attention. Actually, complaints are collectively screaming for innovation. You have been collecting the best research and probably thought it was just a bunch of complaining people. The realization will make you look at your internal and external complainers and their complaints as the gifts they truly are.

Resourcefulness Trumps Resources…Almost Every Time

Innovation: Recruit only resourceful people for your most important projects.

Desired Outcome: Get the best solutions from your best people with the best use of your resources.

From and innovation perspective, I would opt for resourceful people over a fully funded project with no end date every time. Resourcefulness allows people to explore in ways that have never been done before mainly because they have to. If resources are limited, most especially time or money, people will need to do differently and innovation happens almost immediately. We tend to pray more too. Unlimited budgets may sound appealing but it is the constraints that allows for the breakthrough.
